Birth Control vs. Contraception

According to Kippley & Kippley (1996), birth control is defined as a procedure of one or more medications, devices or actions followed so as to intentionally reduce or prevent the possibility of a woman being pregnant or giving birth. The term birth control is frequently used synonymously with such terms as contraception, family planning and fertility control. However, birth control includes abortion to prevent a birth, while family planning methods clearly do not consist of abortion. Methods that are meant to reduce or lessen the possibility of the fertilization of an ovum by a spermatozoon might be more particularly be called contraception. Contraception is different from abortion in that contraception prevents fertilization whereas abortion ends an already recognized pregnancy. Procedures of birth control that might prevent the implantation of an embryo if fertilization takes place are medically considered to be contraception but typified by several adversaries as abortifacients. R iddle (1999) said that oral contraceptive pill is considered to be the most popular kind of birth control. There are various brands of the pill and they come in packs of 21 or 28 pills. One pill is taken every day. The first 21 pills have a combination of synthetic estrogen and progesterone hormones. The oral contraceptive pill stops ovulation, stopping the ovaries from releasing eggs. Moreover, the pill likewise thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to enter the uterus. Then, the hormones in the pill prevent fertilization. The pill is 92-99. 7% effective as birth control. In addition, it does not protect against reproductive tract infections, including HIV/AIDS.Meanwhile, Riddle (1999) also maintained that condoms are called barrier methods of birth control because they put up a block, or barrier, which keeps the sperm from reaching the egg. Only latex or polyurethane (because some people are allergic to latex) condoms are proven to help protect against STDs, including HIV. HIV/AIDS Greener (2002) asserted that human immunodeficiency virus or HIV is considered as a retrovirus, which causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). AIDS is a condition in humans wherein the immune system starts to fail causing life-threatening opportunistic infections.Infection with HIV happens by means of the transfer of semen, vaginal fluid, blood, Cowper's fluid or breast milk. Within these body fluids HIV is present as both free virus particles and virus within infected immune cells. The three primary routes of transmission are unprotected sexual intercourse, contaminated needles and transmission from an infected mother to her baby at birth or by way of breast milk. Screening of blood products for HIV in the developed world has largely get rid of transmission by means of infected blood products or blood transfusions.HIV has been discovered at low concentrations in the urine, tears, and saliva of infected humans; however, the risk of transmission by these secr etions is insignificant. At present, there is no vaccine or cure for HIV or AIDS. The only recognized means of prevention is evading exposure to the virus. Nevertheless, an antiretroviral treatment, known as post-exposure prophylaxis is said to reduce or lessen the risk of infection if started instantly after exposure. Recent treatment for HIV infection includes highly active antiretroviral therapy, or HAART.This has been extremely beneficial to numerous HIV-infected individuals since its introduction in 1996, when the protease inhibitor-based HAART initially became available. Present HAART options are combinations (or â€Å"cocktails†) consisting of at least three drugs belonging to at least two types, or â€Å"classes,† of anti-retroviral agents. According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), HIV infection is now pandemic. In fact as of January 2006, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization (WHO) approximate that AIDS has killed over 25 million individuals ever since it was first identified on December 1, 1981.This makes the disease one of the most destructive pandemics in recorded history. In fact, in the year 2005, AIDS claimed a projected 2. 4 to 3. 3 million lives of which over 570,000 were children. References Greener, R. Cloth is used to meet human’s basic needs. It is also can indicate people’s personality, because every people is free to decide what they want to be like. However, most people personally judge others based on what they wore. In other word, cloth is one of the things that determine people’s social status. This phenomenon is a big busin ess opportunity. When people need cloth then there must be others who can satisfy that need. Clothing store is the perfect solution for businessman to meet people’s need of cloth. In addition to get an enjoyable job, businessman can also get high profits. So, designing a clothing store business could be a good opportunity for both consumer and owner.People have a lot of needs that must be fulfilled. But only some of them cannot be deferred. People’s need that must be met is called human’s basic needs. Manfred Max-Neef, Chilean economist-environmentalist and mainly known for his human development model, call it â€Å"Fundamental Human Needs†. He classifies the fundamental human needs as subsistence, protection, affection, understanding, participation, leisure, creation, identity, and freedom. In the first row of fundamental human needs listed the subsistence. It means the parts of subsistence needs are the most important needs. One of the parts of subsisten ce needs is a cloth. Clothing needs exist from the need to protect the body from climate and weather conditions. However, now clothes are not only considered as a human’s basic need, but also as an identity and social’s status. Clothes are a fashion. People love fashion and be fashionable. Fashion makes an important contribution to society. It creates jobs and products that satisfy fundamental human needs. A fashion piece cannot in itself create sustainability. This is created by the way in which people design, make, wear, discard and reincarnate it. People need to design in a way that means that they engage in fashion in a way that is sustainable. Center for Sustainable Fashion from London Collage of Fashion suggest that people re-connect with fashion as a tool for human flourishing and a source of creative employment and productive work by working in two areas. First, critically appraise the role of fashion in our culture, mean people have a deep need for adornment, d iscovery and novelty. Fashion can help them meet these needs.By recognizing and engaging with fashion’s central role in human culture, they build towards more sustainable solutions that meet needs. Second, put human well-being at the heart of fashion production and consumption, mean changing fashion practices to improve well-being of workers, consumers, designers, and producers is central to a more sustainable future. Nowadays, every people wants to be acknowledged about his or her existence. People show their best to get more attention than others. If people are  getting a lot  of attention  from others  it will be  easy for them  to gain recognition of  their existence.Every people has different ways to get it. One of the easier ways to get attention from others is to wear different style of clothes. More eye-catching or fashionable people’s style of clothes, the easier they become the center of attention. To get eye-catching or fashionable clothes, peo ple have to go to a place that provides various types and models, so they can choose the type of clothes that suit them. As described in the first paragraph, people’s clothing needs is big business opportunity. Businessman can design clothing store, as a place to satisfy people’s clothing needs.People can channel their hobby and passion in designing clothes. As Confucius said, â€Å"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life†. Steven Jobs also once said, â€Å"People with passion can change the world for the better. † Asked about the advice he would offer would-be entrepreneurs, he said, â€Å"I'd get a job as a busboy or something until I figured out what I was really passionate about. † That's how much it meant to him. Passion is everything. All of the businessmen do not  have to  come  on time  in the morning  to  work  and  sit  for hours in front of the  computer. They make they own rules. It a lso happens to clothing store’s businessman. Fortunately, there are no  rules  in  fashion. People are free to design and determine various types of clothes that they want to sell. Some statements above already approved that designing a clothing store is really an enjoyable job. Each clothing store has their own characteristic. It can be seen from the type of clothes that its sell. People who design clothing store will be the first people who know and publish the different new styles to public based on their characteristic. Therefore, they can be trendsetter. They must know a fashion  that will be  popular  or  even create  a  new fashion mainstream  society. The fashion lovers, sometimes called fashionita, will  always follow  the latest trends  created by  the trendsetters. It is  a  pride for  the owner of clothing store as people  who  has created  these trends. Besides  getting  the pride,  the  owner of  clothing  store s  are also  getting  high profits  from the  clothing  store  business. It is because the fashion  always change  every time  and the  fashionista  will  always  follow the  newest  trend. So,  the procurement of  new  fashion items  are very  promising  because it  will most likely be  sold. Therefore, the  clothing  store  will  always get the  benefit goes  along with the  change of  fashion. To sum up, designing clothing store is, indeed, a good opportunity for both consumer and owner. For the consumer, clothing store is a place where they can meet one of their basic and fashion needs. It also can show people’s social status and their existence. For the owner, designing clothing store is an enjoyable job that could make them become a trendsetter and get high profit.

High School Journals English 1 for lesson 5 and 6 Essay

High School Journals English 1 for lesson 5 and 6 - Essay Example We are more than satisfied. You taught her things to do, how to behave. She's more manageable, cleaner. Annie Sullivan: Cleaner? Captain Arthur Keller: Well, we say cleanliness is next to godliness. Annie Sullivan: Cleanliness is next to nothing! Give me more time with her. Captain Arthur Keller: Look, what's she spelling? Teaching a dog to spell? The dog doesn't know what she means any more than she knows what you mean, Miss Sullivan. I think you ask too much of her and yourself. God may not have meant Helen to have the eyes you speak of. Annie Sullivan: I mean her to." This section of the play is informative in a number of ways. Firstly, it shows how Captain Arthur Keller feels towards his daughter, describing her as a 'dog'. It illustrates the attitudes of people at the time towards people who are deaf, blind and mute, and allows the achievements of Helen Keller to seem even more amazing than they previously did. Helen Keller survived and accomplished a lot despite this negative a ttitude from her father. The determination of Annie Sullivan is also illustrated well here, as she demands another week with Keller to help improve her spelling and other skills. She demands this time despite the protests of her boss, and is determined that Keller should be able to learn all the skills available to other children. It was the determination of Annie Sullivan against all odds that has allowed the development of Helen Keller into the famous figure she is today. Lesson 5 Journal Entry 3 The theme I have chosen for my interpretive essay on The Miracle Worker is perception. The main role of perception in this play is that it is a contrast between someone without typical perception, Helen Keller, and those around her with normal perception. It is about how the characters in the play assume that Keller cannot learn language because of her deafness, blindness and muteness. The perception of Keller also changes because Annie Sullivan shows that it is possible for someone with these setbacks to possess language and become involved in daily life. Lesson 5 Journal Entry 4 This entry is written from the perspective of Anagnos. Today, I awoke and performed my daily ablutions before walking to the Perkin's Institute for the Blind. I have a meeting with Annie today, someone who I placed into the home of a girl who is not only blind, but deaf and mute; Helen Keller. She's a highly intelligent girl with a lot to give as governess, although she tends to have a high opinion of herself and believe she can work miracles. It is both a blessing and a curse to have someone so dedicated working with the blind, as she gets rather frustrated when she cannot complete the task she has set herself, something which occurs frequently when working with other people, particularly young people. Annie today speaks to me of how Captain Arthur Keller, Helen's father, will not allow her to work with Helen longer, although she feels that she has something more to give to the child. It' s upsetting to see Annie might fail at her job, but I placed her in this household for a reason. She has to do as the Captain wishes, although she does present a good number of reasons why she should stay and be allowed further interaction with the girl. This is an example of the determination that I mentioned earlier. It will be interesting to see how this case progresses. Lesson 5 Journal Entry 5 The following timeline is based on how the perception of the world for Helen Keller has changed

Measuring Institutional Performance Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Measuring Institutional Performance - Assignment Example For instance, if the students at School A receive higher scores on a standardized exam than students at School B, School A is viewed as being the better school. Some areas even rate their schools based on standardized score reports, with parents moving their children around to the higher-rated schools in hopes of them receiving a better education. Certain other statistics are also used as a performance measure when it comes to educational institutions. A large one is the number of students that enroll in college close to graduation or upon graduation from that educational institution. The rating and/or popularity of the colleges that those students enroll in also play a large factor in the process. The numbers of students within an educational institution that participate in community or other outside activities also give a favorable impression when it comes to measuring the performance of that institution. Generally, the more positive media attention an educational institution receives, the better it is rated in its overall performance. Size and financial matters also play a significant role in the performance measurement of an educational institution. Generally, larger schools are seen as being more productive since they typically have more resources to fund activities that can better enrich the lives of their students. They can also afford more educational materials that can help their students learn and retain more material. The tradeoff is that students in smaller schools often receive more personalized attention because of smaller class sizes and better student-to-teacher ratios. According to Mayston when referring to this topic (2000, pg. 1), "These issues relate to the clarification of the objectives of the education system, the impact of performance reward systems, such as Performance Related Pay, the role of resources in influencing educational outcomes, the reliability of existing methods of assessing educational performance, such as Data Envelopment Analysis and multivariate regression, and the need for an improved national comparative database if progress is to be made in several of these directions." Consider the idea that the United States is 'exceptional' and Essay

Consider the idea that the United States is 'exceptional' and therefore exempt from traditional rules governing international be - Essay Example This concept has its origin from US political institutions formed from 1776-1789, the declaration of US independence in 1776, the American revolution of 1776-83, and the adoption of American constitution in 1787. The American Revolution and its liberation from the British are historical aspects of American exceptionalism. The American’s prosperity has its origin in political differences, social mobility, assimilation of immigrants, liberty of Americans, and America’s vast resources. Discussion The history of America is inadequate because many aspects have been left out or are distorted in the traditional narratives. This particularly relates to the history of American Indians and their contribution to American history (Tyrrell, 2010). The issues of races and slavery are tragic exception in American history. The end to the slave trade was a rebirth of freedom in America. Ignatieff (2005) says that Americanism exceptionalism has a negative perspective which explains that US is exceptionally unpleasant, violent and racist. The term exceptionalism was first coined by the German Marxists who intended to offer an explanation behind US rising above socialism and Marxism and embracing capitalism. However, Marxists conclude that exceptionalism is more than class conflict. Other scholars prefer to use the term uniqueness or differences to explain US exceptionalism. United States exceptionalism has been argued to emerge from its political, religious and intellectual aspects. It is also perceived to be enduring. Kolodziej and Roger (2008) notes American exceptionalism is a fundamental determinant of the American Psyche and has its values embedded in the culture of Americans civilians. The term has assumed changes over time which can be clearly seen from the reign of various US presidents. For example, President Thomas Jefferson rejected the rule of European countries through voting and dictatorship. President Washington tried to insulate US politics from corr uption and foreign intervention, Abraham Lincoln strived to unify Americans and President Andrew Jackson tried to raise the status of US citizens. President Delano Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson made efforts to make the world safe for trade and democracies through their intervention, which made World War I and II come to an end. President Truman identified American security, democratic values and US economic well being as necessary in competition with the Soviet Union. President Regan Portrayed US as an exceptional country that should be emulated by other nations. President George W. Bush tried to maximize freedom available to the Americans (Kolodziej and Rogers, 2008) Kolodziej and Rogers (2008) focus their discussions on how president George W. Bush American regime interpreted exceptionalism to expand the American powers. Exceptionalism provides US a justification for the rejection of foreign policy, which US views as misguided and the criticism by US citizens to increase the scope of international law and institutions. President Bush tried to maximize Americans freedom through US powers, global objectives, and moral status at the expense of reforming America’s image in the face of other countries internationally. The main focus of US in the present days is to resist any limitations on its powers as it pursues its aspiration of exceptionalism worldwide. This can be clearly seen from the little support provided to International Criminal Court (ICC) by US. The

On the contrary, I have some few areas that I need to improve such as on financial discipline, eating patterns and inconsistent exercising. Transport management Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Transport management - Coursework Example An effective and efficient supply chain, which occurs through collaboration, is indispensable in sustaining the project. Sustainability is a key issue in every project. This occurs as business entities constantly create externalities to the environment. Organizations, therefore, have to realize that they are part of a larger chain that they create costs to the same. Externalities normally occur in terms of environmental costs that businesses extend upon the population. In this sense, the Bamstrad tender faces the duty of ensuring sustainable work. Sustainability refers to the idea of production that allows for similar future production. This suggests that current producers should not exploit the environment to the extent that that it constrains the capacity for future survival. To begin with, the project managers should establish a proper relationship with the surrounding community. The surrounding community entails many partners, of whom the project indirectly affects. For instance, the schools and the business entities acquire the benefits and costs of the project. In this sense, it is instrumental to involve them by ensuring that they give their opinions about the development of the project. In case such a project produces detrimental results to the environment, the community becomes the first-hand account of the experience (Tumlin, 2012). This suggests that the community is one of the most effective ways of measuring the success of a public project. A proper relationship with the community helps the community report on particular faults. For instance, the community may gauge the noise levels of the tractors. This helps the project managers fine-tune the tractors’ engines to produce less noise. In addition, a proper regulation and assessment system needs to be established. This requires the economic accounting of costs and benefits of the project. Regular accounting of developing costs and benefits makes the project managers understand the

Oil in North America Annotated Bibliography Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Oil in North America - Annotated Bibliography Example This short article is a review of a much longer book on the subject of the American strategic petroleum reserve which was first created after the first oil crisis of 1973-1974. Van Doren acknowledges the factual account of what happened following the decision to create such a reserve, but his review focuses mainly on the political dimension of oil policies in the United Sates from the mid-1970s until the present day. Successive presidents adopted varying strategies, sometimes using government resources to fill up the reserve, and sometimes halting this process when deficits in the budget squeezed their ability to spend freely. The impact of the Kuwait war is mentioned, and specifically as a brief interlude when the reserve was actually used up partially, and although there was an immediate drop in the price of oil , Van Doren comments that this was probably not connected with the use of the strategic reserve.
